THE ART

The iconographic scheme of this mosaic (3,780 sq. ft.) in the south nave dome of the Great Upper Church divides into quadrants depicting the Incarnation of Jesus: the Annunciation (Luke 1: 26-38); the Nativity (Luke 2: 4-7); the Wedding Feast at Cana (John 2: 1-11); and the Transfiguration (Matthew 17: 1-9). The four pendentives portray significant persons from the scriptural and prophetic accounts of the Incarnation of Jesus: the Prophet Isaiah, the Prophet Jeremiah, the Matriarch Sarah, and the Prophet Micah.

The mosaic design is by Leandro Miguel Velasco (Rambusch Decorating Co.) and the mosaic manufacturer is Travisanutto, Spilimbergo, Italy.

THE SACRED SITE

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C. is the pre-eminent Marian shrine of the Catholic Church in the United States. It was built between 1920 and 1959 and is one of the ten largest churches in the world. This beautiful votive church of pilgrimage honors the Blessed Mother under her title of the Immaculate Conception as the Patroness of the United States.
