East Rose Window Silk Square, 35"x 35", Hand-screen printed, 100% Silk Twill, hand-rolled hem. #605 $70.

During the Gold Rush of 1849, the first Grace Chapel was built. By 1906, Grace Cathedral had been constructed. The earthquake that year destroyed it, and the philanthropic Crocker family donated its Nob Hill property for a new Cathedral.

Today's structure was completed in 1964 and is the third-largest Episcopalian Cathedral in the nation.

Designed in the French-Gothic style, it is famed for its Ghiberti "Gates of Paradise" doors, labyrinths and varied stained-glass windows. An international pilgrimage center, Grace Cathedral is one of San Francisco's treasures. Not only is it architecturally beautiful, the heart of its philosophy is beautiful as well. Innovative, cross-cultural outreach and programming serve to unite San Francisco's many diverse populations.

The magnificent East Rose Window depicts the great poem written by Saint Francis of Assisi, "Canticle of the Sun." The poem is a song to God celebrating the beauty, kinship and sustenance of nature.

Decorate with SilksThe largest window in Grace Cathedral, it has 3,765 pieces of thick faceted glass, and was designed and executed by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, France. He commented, "This window stands testimony to the possibilities of dream and prayer."
