Cathedral of St John the DivineLocated on 13 beautifully-landscaped acres just south of Columbia University on Manhattan's upper West Side is the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. The largest Cathedral in the world, its interior is 601 feet long, and the nave is 124 feet high and 146 feet wide.

On December 27, 1892, the cornerstone of the Cathedral was laid. Still to be completed are the west towers, the transepts and the crossing.

C. Grant LaFarge designed the East End in the Romanesque-Byzantine style between 1897-1911. The Gothic Nave and West Front are the work of Ralph Adams Cram and were built between 1911-1941. An architectural treasure, it is visited each year by a half-million tourists and pilgrims. Another half-million persons annually attend services of worship and special events. The Cathedral is the seat of the Episcopal Bishop of New York.

This silk is based on the Cathedral's Greater Rose Window, the largest stained-glass window in the United States and the third largest in the world. Measuring 40 feet in diameter, it contains over 10,000 pieces of glass. Christ in Glory, at the center of this exquisite Rose Window design, is surrounded by Angels and gifts of the Spirit.

Encircling the Angels are the Beatitudes; the Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; and the Prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel. Around the outer edge are symbols of Divine Love, Seraphim; and of Divine Wisdom, Cherubim. William Woodward Decorate with Silksgave this window in memory of his family. It was designed and executed by Charles J. Connick.
