Sacred Silks International LLC :: British Library
The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of Britain's greatest artistic treasures, an outstanding surviving example of Insular Anglo-Saxon and Celtic book painting of the early eighth century. Written and illuminated in honour of God and St Cuthbert about AD 715-20, it is famous for the superb quality and intricate design of its decorated pages.
Each of the four gospels (St Matthew, St John, St Luke and St Mark) opens with a miniature of the appropriate Evangelist and an elaborate decorative 'carpet' page based on the form of a cross – one of which has been reproduced on this elegant silk. It can be worn as a scarf, framed or hung as art, or used as a beautiful table overlay.
